This week's victim is online music store's! I don't mean the Itune's type which has song's for $.99 a peice with heavy copyprotection (that's for next week), but the so called $9.95 a month get all you want service type for say hmm Napster? Even a few ISP's have gotten into it. What's wrong you say? Well listen up you download and pay $9.95 or even higher on some system's and your limited on most of them to 1-3 computer's to listen to your collection on and guess what? Got a MP3 Player? might as well be a brick with most of the service's! Want to burn a CD and listen in your car? Nope not unless you buy the song's! Did you catch it? at $9.95+ per month your renting the music not buying the music, yep that's right if you miss a bill or decided to go somewhere else POOF your collection won't play anymore!

Unlike movie's which you can rent and watch maybe once or twice and be bored of it you tend to listen to your music everyhere and all the time. After a few mon's of renting the music you might as well had bought the CD!

This week's program to great reamed is Quicktime. (Now just a note for the reader that said he could not find the name of last week's program this week it is Quicktime <----- hehe, first line last word just like last week, duhhh!)Enough fun now off to why i think it deserve's the trash status, does it do anything special? Nope even the free VLC Player plays every single format it does also and actually alot smoother. As a owner of Quicktime Pro i still can not find the one single function that every other damn player on the market can do even the biggest trash one's. What is it? Stay on Top when playing! Good lord how hard is that to code in? I start playing a file in it and feel like surfing the net, can i nope! The player goes poof off the screen the first time i click on anything, that is pure bull!

Tuesday's Trash - A Day Late!

Sorry about the delay folks computer problem's are plagueing me till i can get a new USB pci card. Keyboard keep's locking up and machine respond's funny.

This week's poor little program to get punched around is DSL Speed. Oh goody where do i start? first off it's bloatware too many fancy thing's to clog you down just to adjust simple setting's in window's. Why is it flawed in my book? for one it's not free, excuse me there are like over a hundred program's that do this and are FREE, why pay $24.95 for something that in truth will not really give you any speed difference to write home to mama about! Any good program which is rare, would do constant speed test's and auto adjust to the given connection. And anyone that has spent the time adjusting their connection to be as fast as it can go will tell you the adjust's would have to change allmost daily to give it any real seen difference. And actually if you are running Window's 2000 or better as in XP you don't need the crap anyway's but for ME and lower user's find a free solution. Stop paying for stuff you can get free.

IE Tab

IE Tab - an extension from Taiwan, Allow's embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox. No more problem's with using Firefox on one of those IE only website's, cough cough WindowsUpdate cough cough. It even goes as far as letting you ad site's to a list that when you vist one on the list it automaticly changes to IE then back when you leave! This is by far the best extenstion i have seen to date!

This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your webpage displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.

About the security issue:
IE is not loaded all the time. Only after you switch browser engine explicitly or add the website you trust to the white list. So, the security hole can be minimized. Besides, IE itself cannot access anything in Firefox.

Tuesday's Trash 11/8/05

This week's pile of trash will no doubt get me hate mail! Azureus Bittorrent Client. Why is it considered trash in my book? Well the enterface is well written and up untill the latest Beta Client of the true Bittorrent client it did one up it by supporting multiple downloads at once. Well no more the offical client support's multiple download's at once. What does Azureus do that just plain pisses me off? It is built in Java and as most user's notice when you surf to a website that use's alot of Java your computer start's slowing wayyyy down. So what does this jewel of a program do since it's built in Java? Hog the F**king hell out of your resource's. After i had it running grabbing a copy of a Twit episode (sorry Riaa and Mpaa that's a legal free use for it so Ha!!) i awoke to it using 150 meg's of Ram and 85% Cpu. WHAT THE HELL????? The offical never use's over 20 meg's of ram and 25% of cpu. And it seemed the longer i left it going the more it tryed to hog.

Tuesday's Trash 11/01/05

This week's trash allmost had a running for a regular post except for two problem's. First off you do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it to a extent. But really people if you have to use another player that support's RealMedia file's then what's the purpose of the damn plugin?? To look good?? The next problem is in what is supported or as i should state what isn't! Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip.

Yha that's what i want something that is a plugin for ANOTHER media player that allready support's it without it. Yha and one that only play's part of a clip not all of it, sound's like a useless install.

Bazooka Adaware/Spyware Scanner, Oh how i wanted to love this simple little program. It's got so much going for it, it's small, fast to load, fast to scan and FREE. Why is it trash? well for starter's it told me today while i was taking the screen shot to do this post, you need to update! Well that's fine i hit update and it tell's me it's up to date? Then it tell's me again that i need to update? Make up your DAMN mind! When i was doing testing on it spyware was found, sound's good doesn't it? Nope it does a good job finding them, then it send's you to a webpage to manualy remove them with mulitple step solution's involving working in the registry and in safe mode. How many computer user's do you know that can handle the registry let alone getting into safe mode! Seem's kinda funny that simple ole free Adaware took care of it with nothing more then a reboot.

What is a rootkit?

How common is the problem?

There are currently several spyware programs and viruses that use rootkits to hide. There are also a couple of publicly reported intrusions where rootkits have been used (for example the theft of the Half-Life 2 source code).

Rootkits are already quite common in spyware programs but not as common in viruses. There is clear evidence that rootkits is a technique that works in practice. But the actual threat is still small compared to the potential of this technique.

What malware uses rootkit techniques?

First of all, "real" rootkits such as Hacker Defender and FU, of course. Then some spyware/adware programs such as EliteToolbar, ProAgent, and Probot SE. Some Trojans such as Berbew/Padodor and Feutel/Hupigon, and also some worms e.g. Myfip.h and the Maslan-family.

Shouldn't antivirus detect rootkits before they go into hiding?

Yes, and in some cases it will. However, rootkits are usually distributed in source code and that means a hacker can modify the rootkit until antivirus products no longer detect it. In fact, many rootkit and Trojan authors sell "undetection service" to their "customers". This means that for a certain amount of money they guarantee that the rootkit binary they sell is not at that point detected by any antivirus vendors. There are also some other features in modern antivirus products that may detect rootkits. For example F-Secure Internet Security 2005 has a feature they call "Manipulation Control". It is a behavioral blocking mechanism that prevents malicious processes from manipulating other processes. This will prevent the activation of some rootkits, but not all.

Welome again to another week at TheDailyDownload.org. Change's change's change's!!! The new look is doing great i now have alot more room to work with. The current vistor system craped out so i found a free RSS Feed to html plugin to show the last 3 vistor's, i could have listed more but it took up too much room, but i added the Date and Time visted to it. This past week i did a book review over at a colleage of mine's website TheSundayReview.com about one of Kevin Mitnick's books. And also just before this past weekend i added a new website to the DailyDownload Network. The new website's name is AllINeedIs.Info this new site is going to be for the dark side of the Internet. It won't be updated daily like this one but atleast once a week and maybe more frequently if the hit rate goes up. But the post's will be much much longer then here, since i will be giving much more info there. Icon Restore installs LAYOUT.DLL (along with the required registry entries) from Microsoft. Two new options are added to the pop up menu that opens when any Windows system icon (ex. You’d lose your address book, your contact list with all those email addresses you have accumulated over the years and every email you have saved. If you have organized all your emails into folders, you would lose that too. Not a pretty picture huh? Backing up email and email programs can be a nightmare. You feel like you need to be a brain surgeon to find all the files you need to make a proper backup, and Outlook and Outlook Express like to hide critical files in the darndest places on your computer. Unless you really know what you are doing, and where things are, a perfect backup by hand is next to impossible.

You can replace software, even your computer. You cannot replace your personal files. When they’re gone, they’re gone! The newest version of Genie Backup Manager is even better than before. I don’t know about you, but it would take me weeks to get my Fonts folder back to normal if my hard drive crashed.

This week im going to do a little teaching! When you install a program READ THE DAMN LICENSE AGREEMENT WHEN YOU INSTALL SOMETHING!!! Please oh please don't hit next, next, next. Take the moment to read, why do you say this? Well if you take a moment and read the license agreement for a well known program called Gator. You can read it full size here.

You will notice the line that say's Do you want to install and run after accepting our agreement's blah blah blah. You will notice it say's that you allow them to show ad's based on what website's you are viewing. HELLO!! that mean's in order to do this it has to do the following.

Watch what website's you are visting!
Watch what you are buying!
And download new ad's in the background. (without you knowing it!)

Excuse me but if the main purpose of this program is to store your data to help fill in form's on website's. Then what is it sending also? Your Name, Address, Phone Number's , CREDIT CARD NUMBER'S ???? Got to make you wonder don't it?

Well as im getting closer and closer to the final look (working on a background image but not sure if i want to stray from the fast loading simple, white comment's are welcome) ive ran into a weird rendering issue in Internet Explorer as far as how the banner and sidebar's line up. Real weird looks great in Firefox, Opera, and Netscape almost identical except for in IE. It's fully usable and don't look bad but it bother's the crap out of me that it's different. Normaly i wouldn't think of posting a Beta version of a software, but this one i feel is worth it to have now! A Beta for those not in the software testing loop is a early version of a peice of software released into the wild to be installed and ran looking for bug's and other problem's so the code can be improved in later version's, AKA this product is not on the market yet. It's fully functional and stable on my system so give it a shot! But as any new peice of software be carefull with what you do becasue you may make your system loos functioanly by turning off the wrong thing so if in doubt leave it alone.

Ok now onto the good stuff. Why is it worthy of my post you say? Well it's a startup manager which mean's you can look at everything that is starting with your computer's Bootup and most likey slowing it down. It also has the very very very nice function of Google It. That one function is well worth noting since if in doubt of a program you choose Google It and it will search the name of it in Google for you so you can read and find out what it is, and what it does. A very good way of finding out if you have spyware your spyware program hasn't found yet. Or program's starting with window's that you don't need or use anymore.

Tonight i was thinking. what do i show tonight? Looking at my list that ive made of good program's worthy of this site looking for a idea it hit me! Last night while trying to reinstall Directx, which is one of the most horable things you can try to do. One of the program's i downloaded that was supposed to do it for me was infected to HELL with spyware/adware. After a few atempts of trying to kill the process then kill it by hand, which was futial since it had mutliple's running as in 12 and they would reload the missing process's if you killed one. Getting pissed as i was i looked toward the program's i had installed. What happened you say? This was a nasty one it killed the following progams when you even tryed to run them. Stegano's Antispyware, Webroot's SpySweeper, and XsoftSpy. So before i booted into safe mode and went on a rampage hunting it i tryed one last one. Etrust's Pestpatrol, well let me tell you it found it and killed it! Some it couldnt stop while it was running but it made it so it wouldnt run next reboot, and it deleted the rest. On next reboot i ran it again and it deleted the other's just like it said it would. Would i suggest it? YES and even a Hell Yes!

Why should i care about ITunes 5 if i don't own a Ipod? Well the latest craze in moblie audio is Podcast's but getting podcast's up to now has been hard to near headache bringing. You have to find a program that will download them then you have to find the compatable RSS feed for that program. Then after all that you have to get it to download them. Then even after all that you still have to upload them to your MP3 player by hand or play them in a external player!

Sound's like fun don't it? Well now you can pull all of those step's into only one maybe two, becasue all or almost all podcast's are in the itunes library by defualt. Once you choose subscribe to them Itunes will automaticly download the latest of each to a folder everytime you open it, if there is a new. Then you have two choice's, either to listen to them in ITunes or upload them to your MP3 player from the folder's.

Another feature is the ITune's music store which i strongly do not recomend to use since it lock's your music to either your computer or to a Ipod. Other alternative's for online music are wildy avaliable.

ITunes alos feature's a large selection of online music radio also which i found real nice.

In other news ive started work on a sister site yet to be given a name (idea’s in the comment section are appreciated), this new site will be more of a black sheep twin to this site. Where as this one is for Good Daily Download’s the other will be themed more about what your shouldn’t download AKA, spyware infested junk or otherwise worthless download’s. It’s main plan at the moment is to be more of one large weekly update and not small daily one’s but there is a chance of that changing. I’m trying to add a extra author to this and the other site soon to help in content. My main plan was not to release the sister site untill i had this one moved over to the new host and the new redesign completed, but why keep you waiting?

This week will be another mixed week in content. I have decided to change to a more anything go’s format except for one week a month i will do a special all week long gathering of download’s geared toward one subject. So untill then check back daily becasue you never know what you will find next.

Well after much much problem’s trying to find the fix for the IE bug im actually glad to say that you can actually view this page correctly in Internet Explorer. I added the new banner at the top i hope everyone like’s it and ive moved a few ad’s around to make the content the first thing you see. After all that’s what your coming back for, speaking of ad’s thank you for everyone that has clicked them. I find this very usefull if im trying to find a business or someone that called or im trying to locate. Ever have a call on your callerid and wanted to know where it came from? This will do the trick for you. Trying to find someones house? If you have their phone number and its publicy listed, which 95% are then you have it. Find a phone number on a website or search engine? Just highlight it then right click and choose mapit.

To use these extenstion’s shown this week you will first need the Firefox browser www.firefox.com which you should have been using in the first place . While within the Firefox browser, go to the link given at the bottom of the review.
Click on the Firefox Extension download link. A yellow bar, similar to the following, will appear at the top of the browser.

Why is this better then the Free Edition i reviewed yesterday? Well i can give a compare like this, the Free Edition is like having a new car to drive around in, clean efficent and powerfull and reliable and get’s the job done. The Pro Verison is like having all that and having roadside service. All the powerfull scanning and finding ability of the Free Edition and more much more. Do you have just 1 computer? The Free Edition will do it for you. Have more then one on a network? The Pro Version will even scan netowrk drive’s and clean and repair some file’s that the Free Edition will only block access to. Now don’t get me wrong if your low on cash or don’t want to spend the money grab the Free Edition. But if you want the bang for the buck and the added more powerfull search engine grab the Pro Version you will be happy you did. Price $19.48 a year

AVG Free Edition

Now to get to the good stuff, we are going to wrap this week up with the two that qualify in my book as the most bang for the buck. First up AVG Free Edition, i can not and i repeat can NOT say enough about this product, near zero resource's used and use's a block method on finding a virus. What does that mean? It blocks all access to the infect file no matter how hard you try you or the computer can not access it as long as AVG is running. This one Antivirus program is great for user's that can't afford anything else and just wan't protection. Easy to install, frequent free update's and very very good virus capture stat's, not many virus scanner's including one's that cost more then this ( it's FREE) can compare. Is there anything really better then this for the most bang for the buck? Find out next when i wrap up the Antivirus Compare Week on Saturday.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2005

Today im reviewing F-Secure Anti-Virus 2005, let's get down to the point does it work? Yes it work's very good and found all 5 of the test virus's i threw at it and found them fast. Install went smooth and daily use was simple and easy. So what are the problem's you say? For one it's a resource hog which seem's to be the norm for most of them. Second it the cost $69 for it seem's just to high when you have something like McAfee at $29 which is a far better product. All in all if you can get a good deal on it grab it but if it's no better then McAfee leave it be.

I give it a 4 out of 5 (pricey compared to other's)

This one is a little different from format then the other's, Why is that? Becasue you don't install it on your computer. How much will that matter? Not much yes you won't have realtime protection like the other's but it will allway's be updated no matter what everytime you run it and use's zero system resource's including hardrive space when you do not. Price - FREE / Update's - FREE , i can't say enough about this product a Virus, Security, and Spyware scan fully updated everytime and no reason to install or let something eat up system resource's. If your a carefull downloader as you travel the internet and scan with this about once a week atleast this is all you will ever need. NOTE: Works best with Internet Explorer for right now.

First off this thing is a resource hog from hell it slow's down my system when it's on and personaly allmost crashed it when i tryed to uninstall it! What a load of **** it didn't even detect the test virus's i laid up for it. For $49.95 a year, not only pass it up but run from it!

McAfee VirusScan

McAfee VirusScan has been around for quite awhile and seem's to be getting better every year. For a paid Viruscanner and not a Freebie it is worth the $$ if you can afford to buy software some people can't. For a Subscription update system you do get quite frequent update's, and in my testing caught everything i threw at it, plus it's not a resource hog unlike tommorow's subject Norton. All in all if you can afford it grab it, otherwise stay tuned for some good freebie Antivirus program's later in the week. Price - $29 Update Subscription - $39 per year (cheaper in multi year plan's)

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is the first of the Antivirus's i will be reviewing this week. To start off it's really good on system resource's it doesn't hog alot of ram or slow down running program's much. But it has something i feel wrong with it. First off when you run a full system scan overnight that check's every file it stop's if it finds something which is good but doesn't scan further untill you tell it what to do with what it found. That may sound good but when you have a running virus i would rather it stop the process or block the file from running and keep scanning until it's done and give you the option then to kill all. Update's are frequent and Free. Price for Program - FREE

I give it a 4 out of 5 (add the scan to end then ask option and it would have a 5)

Well i tryed this out over the last few day's. It as advertised is used to find duplicate file's that take up harddrive room so you can delete the duplicate's. Well other then being a major resource hog while its running it found quite a few but none that took up much room. For $26.80 for the Home Edition and $48.80 for the Enterprise Edition and not even having the courtesy of having a uninstall option in the start menu (which as a install maker i can tell you it's no big thing just checking 1 simple box) i say skip it.

FireFox is a Open Source free browser that is fast and powerfull and using some of the hundred's of extenstion's can be turned into the only browser you will ever need. If your a Internet Explorer user (and i know some of you are) please please give firefox a try after adding a few extenstion's you will never go back plus Firefox has the added security that is not offered in IE. Coming in 2 week's August 21-27 i will be reviewing extenstion's and other addon's that will make you wonder why you haven't switched before. Best of all it's FREE.

Getright 5 is a download manager and accelerator software that claim's to speed up download's by pulling file's from seperate location's at once. In my trial's it would connect to mirror's which is good incase of one failing which in the modern world is not as likely anymore unless its something you shouldn't be downloading anyhow. Do you need it? well it does have the added function to resume download's if connection is lost, but at $25 there is alot more freeware download resume program's out there if you really need one.

Forget Skype this is the answer. It give's free 1 min call's to anywhere in the world and if you pay $1 Euro it will give you unlimted call's to All US landline's and .01 cent per min call's to Mobile's in the US. Call's to oversea's are at different but very low rate's as i can tell. Voice quality on my Cable connection was perfect fooled my wife she was asking me what phone i was calling from. This is great for people like me which choose to have no landline and it's not free night's or weekend time on their Cellphone's for qucik phone call's. The only down fall is that there is no way to have incoming call's unlike Skype but this is at a much much lower cost.

Smart Close

Smart Close the answer to All gamer's need's.

What is a gamer's worse problem? System resource's, Ram and CPU being stolen from you by every other running process going. All you could do is Ctrl Alt Del and slowly close each one you can find before you fire up the game to get peak performance but you still won't get everything.
What Smart Close does with one step is to take a snapshot of everthing running and close everthing you don't need including window's service's that are not the bare min to run window's. Then after you are done playing or anything else resource heavy including Photo and Video work or maybe AutoCad you just run the Restore Snapshot and choose last snapshot and it put't your computer exactly back the way it was. And of course it cost's Zip Natta Nothing.

Ever have a program try to take over? Well i finally found the answer it's called Process Tamer it's a small program that sit's in the system tray when it sees a process that is overloading your cpu, it reduces the priority of that process temporarily, until its cpu usage returns to a reasonable level. After 3 week's of testing it has allmost completly put a stop to what i call system hanger's, the program's that will suddenly hog 100% resource's and hang the system. Best of all this is FREE the one word you will find here alot.
